Winter Solstice has just passed, its midwinter with shorter days and longer nights. We spend most of our time indoors, trying to avoid the winter weather. And, to ensure we stay as warm as possible, we work to keep our homes well insulated and free from drafts. This is a great way to keep heating bills down but it’s not so good for the quality of our indoor air. Humidity can lead to an increase in dust mites and bacteria, causing real problems for people with asthma and allergies. And if mold is also present in the home, the asthma risk can double.

So how do we stay warm AND healthy through the coming winter months, without running up huge heating bills? The answer is ventilation. Yes our homes should be draft free and well insulated but in order to prevent mold and dampness and ensure good air quality, our homes must also be adequately ventilated. A well ventilated home allows air to flow, creating an environment where mold and bacteria cannot develop.

If you are still not happy with your home environment this winter, our air purifiers are excellent at removing airborne allergens such as dust and mold spores in damp environments.
