For some time now, air pollution in Chinese cities has been dangerously high. In 2013 the level of pollution was measured at 35 times higher than the level deemed safe by the WHO (World Health Organization).

This year the Chinese government plans to invest a huge 1.74 billion dollars to reduce pollution across the country. One solution comes from a group of engineers from London and Hong Kong, as they have developed a novel new way to protect the Chinese people from the air outside.

Working in a similar way to an indoor air purifier, the bubble like shield is installed onto buildings to remove dangerous particles from the air. The development team claim it can protect up to 20 people at one time. In previous tests earlier this year the system has shown to reduce pollution particles by as much as 70% in the areas below the canopy. Still in testing phase, the system is currently designed to remove the most harmful toxins. The next stage of development will involve an upgrade to ensure people are protected from all types of toxins, including nitrogen dioxide.

Could this be the start of things to come, living in a world that is protected by a space age bubble?
